Hey there Reader,

Women Who Rise: The Legacy We Carry

I remember being a little girl, and every evening, my mother would have special time for each of us.

We would cuddle on the bed, and from the earliest days, I remember her saying,

"You can do anything you want to do. You don’t need anyone to make that happen for you. You don’t need approval from others to know your worth."

Those words became the foundation of how I saw myself and what I believed was possible.

In my case my father was also a strong supporter of women doing everything a man or boy could do. Equality in my home meant we all learned how to do everything- lay cement, paint a house, replace a starter in my first car and learn about the world and how to survive and thrive in it. I was lucky in so many ways.

My mother sought independence at a time when it wasn’t encouraged. Her career in nursing gave her choices, strength, and a voice. She passed that strength on to me, always reminding me to stand tall, to speak up, and to believe in myself.

She taught me that having my own money meant having my own choices, that my voice mattered, and that my worth was never dependent on someone else’s validation. I carry those lessons with me, and I try to live them every day.

I also think of Dr. Jean Scott, a woman I had the honour of knowing and working alongside in the development of our local transition house and in ultimately advocating for it to bear her name.

She devoted her life to helping women in crisis, and the Jean Scott Transition House is a testament to her unwavering commitment and passion towards improving the lives of women.

She fought for dignity, safety, and respect for women who needed it most, and she never backed down in the face of challenges. Her legacy is a reminder that even one person’s efforts can change lives for generations to come.

International Women’s Day has passed, but our voices must carry on. The strength of women—our resilience, courage, and impact—deserves more than a single day of recognition.

It is a daily commitment, a shared responsibility, and a movement that continues through our actions, our choices, and the ways we support one another.

Honouring Those Who Fought for Us

The Famous Five—Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, and Henrietta Muir Edwards—stood up when women were told they didn’t count.

Their victory in the 1929 Persons Case gave women legal recognition in Canada, breaking barriers that once seemed unmovable. They fought for rights that many of us take for granted today—the right to be heard, to be counted, to have a say in the direction of our own lives. Their fight wasn’t just for them—it was for us, for our daughters, and for every woman who still faces obstacles in pursuit of equality.

We honour them not just by remembering their names, but

  • by continuing their work.
  • by standing up when it’s uncomfortable.
  • by speaking out even when our voices shake.
  • by ensuring that every woman, regardless of her background or circumstances, knows she is seen, she is valued, and she is worthy.

Three Questions to Reflect On:

  1. Who has shaped your strength? Take a moment to reflect on the women who have influenced you? What qualities did they have that you now carry forward?
  2. How are you using your voice? Whether it is advocating for yourself, supporting another woman or standing up for what matters, your voice is powerful. How are you using it?
  3. What legacy will you leave for the next generation? You don't have to change the world in big ways to make a difference. Every action no matter how small, contributes to a future where women continue to rise. What does that look like for you?

Five Simple Ways to Empower Women Every Day:

  • Celebrate and uplift the women around you. A kind word, a shared story, a moment of encouragement—these gestures have lasting impact
  • Support organizations that advocate for women’s rights. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, collective action creates change.
  • Mentor and uplift younger women. Share your experiences, wisdom, and support with those navigating their own path.
  • Stay informed and engaged. Understanding current issues facing women helps us advocate more effectively.
  • Live your life in alignment with your values. When you stand in your truth and embrace your full potential, you inspire others to do the same.

The women before us paved the way. Now, we honor them by continuing to rise—and by lifting others as we do. Strength is not just about what we carry for ourselves, but about how we help others rise alongside us. When we stand together, we are unstoppable.

With love,

Marianne

There’s a quiet space we all settle into—sometimes by choice, sometimes by habit. It’s that familiar territory where we hover just under the surface of what we truly want. That space? It's our set point. It’s the place where things feel manageable, maybe even comfortable, but often—if we’re honest—it’s not where we really want to be....
